Tri-Border: Why there?
I think it's a poor idea to hold a Forum Social in that region. Unless they're explicitly holding it there to combat the other ills in the region. Otherwise, it erodes the meetings legitimacy & credibility in the eyes of powers-that-be. As it should. Holding a meeting in the largest al Qaeda operational theater in the Western Hemisphere? Bad idea. Posted by miguel at March 20, 2004 11:33 AMHey, hey, a second there, please. Would you trade your company in the same markets Enron and WorldCom did? The tri-border area's only claim to international recognition might be its (well earned, I'm afraid) reputation as a crossing zone for everything from drugs to guns, but, trust me on this one, it's overall a *much* safer place to live and have a conference than Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro. "Tri-border zone = smuggling and mafias" is an oversimplifaction; it's like saying "Tlorida = voting fiascos" just because the news coverage covers mostly that as of late. Now, I have my own reservations about the place, those having to do mostly with infrastructure and airline routes, although the presence of the Iguazu Falls means there's a quite strong (for regional standards) turistic infrastructure. And, of course, there's the purely geographic aspect of it: if you want to run an international forum for the region, the tri-border is maybe a nicely symbolic location. Posted by Marcelo at March 20, 2004 10:48 PMMarcelo, One thing is to say that there is corruption in the business. Another, completely different, is to say that the rule of law in Tri-border is the same as in U.S. Even financial scandals like in Italy (Parmalat), Argentina (you know better than me), Brazil and US are not the same as the problems in tri-border. Since 1960, brazilian's diplomacy have had concerns about the illegal activity in the region. Thanks for the comments (hey, thanks to miguel too!!!). Posted by claudio at March 21, 2004 07:27 AMTri border is a nice place for a social-beattles-nobody-knows-what-is-happenig social forum. Itaipu is on the top. So, it is possible finish once and for all this kind of meeting. Posted by Silva at March 21, 2004 08:19 AMEveryone always talks about the "lawlessness" of the tri-border region, but, except for the wonderful shopping opporunities afforded by Ciudad del Este (seen first-hand), I haven't seen much evidence to the lawlessness of the region beyond expert say-so. Do you guys have any recommendations on where I can do a little background reading on the area?
