Mi querido amigo Alejandro Neyra, estuvo recientemente en el museo Guggenheim de Bilbao y se dio con la grata sorpresa de encontrarse con unos 800 peruanos, a los que ya había tenido el gusto de conocer durante la Bienal Iberoamericana 2002 en Lima. Así es cómo él mismo lo cuenta
Estando fuera del Perú, encontrarse con un peruano desconocido – provenga éste de donde provenga – es siempre un motivo de alegría, para recordar con añoranza la tierra lejana. Lo mismo ocurre cuando encontramos alguna mención a nuestro país en alguna obra literaria o artística, cuando escuchamos la palabra Perú en la radio o la televisión o simplemente cuando leemos su nombre en alguna nota periodística de la sección internacional de un diario o revista, por mala que ésta sea.
Luis Loayza, en su ensayo “Vagamente dos peruanos” de su excelente colección El Sol de Lima, recuerda la existencia de dos peruanos anónimos que aparecen fugazmente en dos novelas de Stendhal y de Proust: Rojo y Negro y En busca del tiempo pérdido Como esos hay muchos otros peruanos anónimos y referencias al Perú que aparecen frecuentemente en diversos medios de comunicación del mundo. Sin embargo, encontrarse inesperadamente con más de 800 peruanos desconocidos en Bilbao, centro industrial del País Vasco en España, es sin duda una experiencia fantástica.
El museo Guggenheim de Bilbao es una de las maravillas arquitectónicas del siglo XX. Finalizado en 1997, y diseñado íntegramente por programas de computadora, podría parecer la obra de seres más evolucionados que los humanos. Dentro de este maravilloso complejo dedicado al arte moderno, existen diversas muestras que corresponden a las nuevas tendencias del arte actual; y es allí, dentro de este monumental edificio que se encuentra el video de una obra realizada por 800 peruanos, titulada “La fe mueve montañas”.
Francis Alÿs es un artista belga que el 11 de abril de 2002, luego de haber hecho una convocatoria pública a todos los que quisieran participar, reunió a 800 peruanos en una duna del distrito de Ventanilla, con el propósito de trasladarla algunos centímetros más lejos. Aunque pueda ser cuestionable la definición de este hecho como “artístico”, sin duda el proyecto fue un éxito por la participación masiva en él y porque finalmente se logró mover la duna aproximadamente 10 cm.(con el probable enojo de los cartógrafos).
En la estación de Desamparados de Lima, en el marco de la Bienal Iberoamericana de 2002, se presentó una muestra fotográfica y un vídeo elaborado por Alÿs que reflejaba el trabajo simbólico de estos 800 peruanos que desafiaban la naturaleza para demostrar de manera significativa la importancia del trabajo conjunto y de la unidad en nuestro pueblo. Las fotografías, un vídeo que dura 34 minutos y otro que se proyecta continuamente y que dura 6 minutos pertenecen ahora a la Colección Permanente de la Colección Guggenheim y forman parte de la exposición “Imágenes en movimiento” que se encuentra en el museo Guggenheim de Bilbao desde octubre de 2003 y que permanecerá en sus salas hasta el mes de junio de 2004.
Quizás no sea precisamente orgullo, pero al menos puede decirse que encontrarse en Europa –y en uno de los espacios culturales más importantes de ese continente - con la muestra de que tantos compatriotas se pusieron a trabajar dentro del Perú por una causa común, puede que efectivamente sea un motivo para mantener la fe en nuestro país.
